State of the art of intraoral digital impressions

The emergence of recent advances in digital technologies in the contemporary dental practice is inevitable. Intraoral digital impression belong to the application spectrum of such digital technologies. The goal of intraoral digital impressions is precise data acquisition with the least materials and effort needed. Compared to the conventional approach, the currently available digital impression systems are claimed to provide faster and more accurate impressions, enabling the fabrication of high quality restorations more efficiently and thus provide a higher level of patient care. Although the current intraoral digital impression systems depict some limitations, they are considered as a blueprint for future developments. This presentation will provide an overview about contemporary intraoral impression systems, discuss their possibilities, advantages and limitations and provide insights about future developments.


After receiving the DDS degree in 1997, Dr. Wael Att visited a 2-year residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2000, he joined the postgraduate training program in the Department of Prosthodontics, University of Freiburg and received the Dr Med Dent degree in 2003. He was then appointed as an assistant professor and became a board-certified prosthodontist in 2004 from the German Society for Prosthetic Dentistry and Biomaterials (DGPro). He was a Visiting Assistant Professor from 2005 to 2007 at The Jane and Jerry Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology, UCLA School of Dentistry. Since 2007, Dr. Att has been an Associate Professor and Director of the Postgraduate Program at the Department of Prosthodontics in Freiburg. In 2010, he received the PhD degree from the University of Freiburg. Dr. Att serves as an ad hoc reviewer for several peer-reviewed international journals. He is the President Elect of the Prosthodontics Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and co-founder of the Arabian Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (ARAED). Dr. Att has many publications focusing on implant therapy and basic science in the most respected journals in these fields. His recent research work about the discovery of biological aging and rejuvenation of implant surfaces was honored by listing under "Images of the Year" by Biomaterials journal.
